Hidden food chemicals are causing a global pandemic, says author

June xx, 2011 (MMD Newswire) - - Sulfites – those infamous additives used to make food last longer and look fresher – are ubiquitous in our food supply and environment, and they’re making millions of us miserable and causing some of us to get very sick. So says Australian author, researcher, and certified natural therapist Paul Barratt-Hassett, who believes sulfites and other food additives have created “a global pandemic” of symptoms, syndromes, illnesses, and even some deaths. Barratt-Hassett, who says he healed himself of a debilitating long-term health condition simply by removing sulfites from his diet, is on a mission to inform people about this oft-hidden menace. In the process, he also hopes to influence food labeling laws and other industry practices so consumers can make more informed choices. Earlier this year he published a book, “The Sulphite Connection,” in which he tells his own dramatic story and shares his extensive research and eye-opening revelations about the problems sulfites cause, and the culpability of the food industry.

sulfites and allergies

Q1: In your book you talk about healing Fibromyalgia overnight. What is the condition and how did the elimination sulphites make such a difference?

A: I was first diagnosed with Fibromyalgia back in 1990 and have lived with the condition all of my adult life. It is best characterised as a syndrome where pain occurs in the muscles and surrounding structures, accompanied with severe fatigue, and exhaustion that is NOT abated by rest or sleep.

In the year 2010, 20 years after I was diagnosed, I accidentally discovered sulphites were hidden and undeclared in our food. After researching what foods and food ingredients were adulterated with sulphites, I removed them from my diet and instantly all my symptoms disappeared. I was literally healed overnight!

Q2: How does a person know if sulphites are affecting their health?

A: That is a great question and one that can set the scene for many arguments about cause and effect, but here is my argument that I have written about in my book The Sulphite Connection: sulphites are making everyone sick, to what extent is the question.

There is numerous links to scientific studies, news articles, and academic papers supporting my case, that sulphites are toxic and have no place in our food chain. Symptoms include Fibromyalgia/ME/CFS, allergies, asthma, bedwetting, bloating, brain fog, cancer, Candida infections, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, diabetes, depression, ear infections, Fibromyalgia, glue ear, heart palpitation, hay fever, indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), immune deficiencies, joint pain, lethargy, muscle weakness/loss, nose bleeds, skin conditions, teeth pain, and sore gums, vaginitis (yeast infection). and more.

The key to remember here is this: remove ALL sulphites from your diet, body, and your environment for one month and then you will know for sure if sulphites are to blame – it is a pretty safe bet that they are causing you harm.

Q3: How do sulphites get to be in our food and why?

A: Sulphites are a preservative and are most commonly used to preserve dried fruit, meats, and wine, but they are much more than that and they are used as a processing aid that assists with the production and increased shelf-life of maize-based products like glucose syrup.

I also believe that sulphites are highly addictive because of a term called allergy addiction, which is similar to that of smoking cigarettes. When a smoker first smokes he feels light headed, nauseous, watering and stinging of the eyes and they cough and splutter. With persistence, their symptoms ease and they become addicted. When smokers try to quit, many suffer similar symptoms during the withdrawal process and will fail as they immediately feel better when they resume smoking again.

Sulphites enter our food chain through food additives, food chemicals, the use of animal feed and medications, and through pesticide use in agriculture.

They also extend the shelf life of the product and get people addicted to the food containing them.

Q4: What type of foods contain sulphites, how do people avoid them?

A: Sadly there are too many to mention here, but in my book The Sulphite Connection, I cover them all in great detail. I can tell you they are rampant and wide spread throughout the entire food chain.

For starters, any food which contains glucose syrup, maize starch, corn flour, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), or any processed corn ingredient has sulphites in it, even if the labelling says otherwise.

This is an absolute with one exception and that is certified organic, but even other ingredients that are NOT organic can make up part of the final product, so be very careful.

Sulphites are in more than food. They are in cosmetics, fake tans, clones, perfumes, water supplies, including bottled water, stationary supplies, medications, antibiotics, animal food and medications, and agriculture chemicals like pesticides.

Q5: Why are sulphites not regulated and labelled correctly.

A: They are regulated and they are labelled, although ONLY in levels above 10 parts per million. Levels UNDER 10 parts per million are NOT required to be labelled.

Furthermore, there is a 5% rule that applies to any food additive under a "technical function" ruling. In the case of sulphites used as a preserving agent, if the makeup of an end product does NOT exceed 5% of the "preserving function" of sulphites, then it does not need to be labelled.

You could say it is the preservative you can use when you are not preserving.

Q5: You talk about in your book that as a consumer you can not find out what is really in the food we consume, can you share your experience with that?

A: It started out as a simple exercise. I thought to myself, "I wonder if I could contact my local grower and find out what chemicals were sprayed on his apples that I buy from the local supermarket".

...Then all hell broke loose.

This was a massive task and emotions ran hot. I spoke to my local grower, I emailed Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and the Victorian Department of Primary Industry and no one could or maybe WOULD tell me what chemicals were being sprayed on my apples.

Finally after a number of emails my local grower finally agreed to meet with me. I did eventually find out from him a number of chemicals he used on his apples (including endosulfan) but if he was telling me the whole truth I will never know.

This is a very, very serious problem.

For example, if you consume a garden salad which consists produce from your local supermarket that includes tomatoes from china, lettuce from brazil and carrots from Australia and have an allergic reaction to it, there is no doctor or regulatory body in the world that can tell you exactly which food or food chemical you just reacted too.

There is NO accountability for chemical manufactures. They just use science to bullshit everybody and hide behind lawyers saying, "prove it". No one can do anything from a legal perspective unless they are billionaires and have 10years of spare time, we have all seen what Monsanto has done demonstrating my very point.

Ultimately like many hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world who have mild to severe allergic reactions to food additives and food chemicals there is very little that can be done to change these ridiculous food laws that have come about through corporate corruption.

ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) CASE AGAINST CARMAN'S FINE FOODS.

Carman's Fine Foods is an Australian company that manufactures muesli and muesli bars. Their products are available in supermarkets and health food stores throughout Australia. Carman's muesli is supplied to Qantas for inclusion in an onboard flight meal.

Carman's labelling of their muesli bars used to claim "NO Preservatives", when, in fact, they contained sulphites. As a result, I submitted a claim to the ACCC alerting them to this and won the case. Carman's changed their labelling to avoid prosecution.

Full details of the case including all communication between me Carman's and the ACCC can be downloaded by clicking on pdf image.
